June 10th Research Group Highlights
The June 10th CVGS Research Group met in Room 103A in the Chula Vista City Council Building instead of the Civic Center Branch Library. There were 12 in attendance.
In the first hour, Randy discussed three major topics:
* The SCGS Genealogy Jamboree in pictures and words, describing presentations by Thomas Jones, Michael Lacopo, and Ron Arons.
* The military records on Fold3.com. Examples of a Civil war Widows Pension File and a Revolutionary War Pension File were shown.
* Searching for the location of 4th great-grandfather Humphery White's house in Glocester, R.I. See http://www.geneamusings.com/2015/05/finding-humphrey-whites-house-in.html for details.
In the second hour, the attendees shared:
* Virginia went to Jamboree and described several presentations, especially Steve Morse's talk on the Julian vs. Gregorian calendars. She passed around the published syllabus.
* Claire is getting frustrated with Personal Ancestral file for Mac, and wants help to install PAF and her database on her Windows machine.
* Bobbie and Dennis went to New Orleans on a 5-day Elder Hostel trip to research some "kissing cousins." Five of her six branches of Acadian ancestors moved from Nova Scotia to Illinois, but her relative Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil and his brother Alexander went first to Dominica and then to Lafayette, Louisiana. She found some records, and took photos of the cemetery monument and rubbings of the inscriptions. Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil’s mother was a sister to the Richard woman in Bobbie's line. Also, an elderly couple who was lost at sea was a set of my 6th Great Grandparents, grandchildren of the couple with a Native American wife.
* Susan H. also went to Jamboree, and described presentations by Drew Smith and Lisa Louise Cooke. She also won a Family Tree DNA autosomal DNA kit.
* John had success in a new Ancestry.com database for Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles applications. He found that his ancestor had a Ford car and Ford tractor in the 1920s. John also found several Pennsylvania veterans death records back to the Civil War online.
* Ana and Ceasar attended Jamboree, including the DNA Day. She enjoyed Thomas Jones talk on using timelines to chart movement from one place to another and interface with Google Maps.
* Diane D. found a cousin on Facebook willing to share family information. He invited her to come visit in New York.
* Karen S. is working on her Smith line, and has old photos of two brothers of her grandfather that served in the Civil War. She is searching form ore records.
* Karen Y. advised everyone to note the resources and source citations for records you find and use. She noted that the Jillian Holt papers recently acquired by CVGS consisted of loose papers and microfiche records from Lancashire, plus emails, letters, and onsite research notes.
* Jane watched several of the Jamboree live-streaming presentations online, and enjoyed the autosomal DNA talk. She's preparing for her trip to Troy, New York to research her DelVecchio line. A Florida cousin contacted her on Ancestry with lots of family information, and will meet her in August in New York. She also will meet a relative in Fort Devens, Massachusetts, where her grandfather was discharged from the Army.
The next CVGS Research Group meeting will be on Wednesday, 8 July 2015 in Room 103A of the Chula Vista City Council Building (290 F Street).
